Vestas boosts rotor size for its largest onshore wind turbine

Danish turbine manufacturer says increasing rotor size will boost annual energy production by more than 10%

Vestas has increased rotor size by ten metres to cope with low wind conditions

Vestas has announced an upgrade to its largest turbine which the company said will deliver a significant increase in energy production in low wind conditions.

The company said the V172-7.2 MW will produce a 12% annual energy production boost in low wind conditions, compared to its V162-6.2 MW variant. The rotor size has been increased by ten metres.

The company said the new variant had flexible power ratings of 7.2 MW, 6.8 MW and 6.5 MW and can be adapted to run in cold or hot climates.

The V172-7.2 MW will be based on Vestas’ new modularised nacelle architecture - featured in the latest edition of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç magazine - where the nacelle structure is divided into compartments designed to industry standards for road, rail and ocean transport.

Vestas said that, as a result of the upgrade, it would change the existing medium-to-high wind EnVentus variant V162-6.8 MW to a 7.2 MW name plate.

“The introduction of the V172-7.2 MW will pave the way for wind energy to build scale by introducing more ease and efficiency into how we design and produce high-quality sustainable energy solutions,” said Anders Nielsen, chief technology officer at Vestas.

He added: “The V172-7.2 MW demonstrates how our modular product development can enable customisable solutions, suited to any environment.”
