Copenhagen Energy plans 3GW offshore wind off Western Australia

Company co-founded by European Energy’s former head of offshore wind plans 3GW project off Australia

A new developer founded by Danish wind veterans has unveiled plans for a 3GW offshore wind farm off Western Australia.

Copenhagen Energy plans to build the 3000MW Leeuwin offshore wind farm in Geographe Bay, approximately 15-70km off the south-west of the state.

The developer envisages using up to 200 turbines, with power ratings of 15-25MW, subject to commercial availability.

It believes the wind farm will likely be built in stages, starting construction in 2026 ahead of project completion in 2028, subject to receiving the necessary permitting approvals. 

The Leeuwin project is the largest offshore wind farm currently planned off Western Australia, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the research and data division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç. There is 4.9GW of offshore wind capacity planned off the state, with Flotation Energy, Australia Energy and Pilot Energy all developing projects.

Copenhagen Energy founder Jasmin Bejdic was formerly head of offshore wind at European Energy. While in the role, European Energy received final approvals for its 240MW Jammerland Bugt and 320MW Omø South wind farms off Denmark.

Copenhagen Energy is also working to develop 3GW of offshore wind capacity off the Philippines and 8GW off Ireland.
