Turbine manufacturer WEG to supply 4.2MW models to new wind farm in Brazil

Brazilian turbine manufacturer WEG secures 300MW-plus deal for its largest onshore wind model

WEG installed a prototype of its 4.2MW turbine last year

Turbine maker WEG is to supply 72 wind turbines to CGT Eletrosul for a new wind farm in southern Brazil.

CGT, a subsidiary of state power firm Eletrobras, said it plans to invest BRL 2.1 billion (US$415 million) in the 302.4MW Coxilha Negra project.

The wind farm is due to be located in the city of Sant’Ana do Livramento in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state.

Deliveries of the 4.2MW turbines will begin in 2023 and continue in 2024, WEG said in a statement to the Brazilian stock exchange.

WEG will also transport, assemble, and commission the turbines and provide operational and maintenance (O&M) services.

Construction work is expected to begin by the middle of 2022, while the wind farm is due to begin commercial operations by the end of 2024, selling its power on the free market.

The project will increase the company’s wind energy capacity to around 440MW. The company also operates the 138MW Cerro Chato complex, which lies adjacent to the site of the Coxilha Negra project.

WEG has previously supplied 43 units of its 4.2MW turbine to Alianca Energia in a deal signed in January 2020. It was also due to assemble, commission and provide O&M services for the turbines.
