GE Renewable Energy targets South Korean offshore wind with Hyundai Electric

US turbine manufacturer and heavy electrical machinery provider eye nacelle assembly plant in South Korea

GE's Haliade-X turbine platform has power ratings of up to 14MW

GE Renewable Energy has agreed to partner with Hyundai Electric in targeting the South Korean offshore wind market. It has also outlined plans for a nacelle assembly plant in the country.

GE Offshore Wind CEO, Jan Kjaersgaard, wrote on LinkedIn that GE would bring its “offshore expertise” and Haliade-X technology – a turbine platform with power ratings of up to 14MW – to the partnership.

The partners also outlined plans for a plant in South Korea, where GE’s Haliade-X turbines would be assembled. Its location and construction date remain unclear.

“The detailed timeline of any industrial development will depend on the volume of customers’ orders and their specific projects’ timing,” wrote Kjaersgaard.

International developers such as Aker Offshore Wind and Ocean Winds, Equinor, TotalEnergies and Green Investment Group, and Ørsted, have all announced plans for offshore wind development in South Korean waters.

South Korea’s goal is 12GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, by which point it hopes to be generating 20% of its electricity from renewable sources.
