Offshore wind developer BlueFloat Energy and engineering firm Sener have submitted a declaration of interest (DIP) to the Spanish government to assess the feasibility of a floating offshore wind project off the Galician coast.
They plan to use floating platforms, thus minimising its impact on the marine ecosystem, they stated.
The initial 525MW Parque Nordés wind farm would be located in waters at least 30km off A Coruña. Its developers expect to use 35 turbines with 15MW power ratings.
Subject to additional assessments, the developers are considering adding another 45 wind turbines with 15MW power ratings, expanding the project’s installed capacity by 675MW to 1.2GW.
According to the developers, Parque Nordés will not negatively impact bird protection areas on the Ártabra coast, and is being planned to take into account seafood production facilities. Fishing and port routes are also being avoided.
BlueFloat and Sener are also co-developing a 300MW floating offshore wind project off Almería in southern Spain and a 1GW project off Catalonia in the country’s north-east.
