Siemens Gamesa and Ørsted are investigating what caused a turbine’s nacelle to catch fire at the Danish developer’s 752MW Borssele I & II wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.
One of the offshore wind farm’s SG 8.0-167 DD turbines malfunctioned and caught fire last week, Ørsted confirmed.
No employees were present when the fire broke out on 21 October and no one has been injured.
Both turbine manufacturer and project operator are investigating the cause of the fire.
Borssele I & II continues to operate, except for the damaged turbine and two others that are connected to it. These two turbines have not been damaged and show no signs of abnormalities, Ørsted stated.
Ørsted is working to bring these two turbines back online as soon as possible.
The damaged turbine will be dismantled, and Ørsted will assess which parts it can potentially re-use.
The other 93 turbines at the wind farm show no signs of abnormalities, Ørsted added.
Ørsted – then Dong Energy – secured an offtake agreement worth €72.70/MWh for Borssele I & II in a competitive tender in 2016.
It commissioned Borssele I & II in 2020 and has since sold a 50% stake to Norwegian oil fund Norges Bank Investment Management.
