Floating offshore wind newcomer Gazelle Wind Power has raised $4 million to accelerate development of its hybrid floating offshore wind platform.
The Dublin-based manufacturer’s three-legged platform combines features from tension-leg and semi-submersible designs.
Its design features three cylinders to provide buoyancy, while its combined legs and mooring system will stabilise the structure.
The company claims its platform will use less steel and be cheaper than other floating wind platforms.
It added that its platform will also have smaller horizontal movements, a smaller swept area, drift less than other semi-submersible platforms, and have a tilt of less than 1 degree.
Gazelle Wind Power has not confirmed when or where a pilot project would be deployed, or when it expects to make the platform commercially available.
It has also not confirmed whether it will require further funding.
Industry experience
Founded by former Deloitte senior adviser Jon Salazar, the company recently announced its board of directors would include industry veterans and global policymakers, including Pierpaolo Mazza – who previously worked for GE Power Generation and Finnish energy equipment manufacturer Wartsila Corporation – as CEO.
The board also includes David Mesonero – former Siemens Gamesa chief financial officer and current deputy director of Iberdrola’s corporate development – and Connie Hedgegaard – former Danish environment minister and commissioner for climate action – as non-executive directors.
