Acciona Energía and SSE Renewables have signed a memorandum of understanding to target Polish offshore wind together.

The partners aim to eventually create a 50:50 joint venture for the Polish offshore wind market.

They are already collaborating to develop offshore wind projects off Spain and Portugal, having signed an exclusivity agreement earlier this year.

Jim Smith, managing director of SSE Renewables said: “There are exciting opportunities in the Polish offshore wind sector, with an advanced roadmap, a clear target for 2030, and great ambition from 2040 onwards.”

Poland aims to generate at least 23% of its gross energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030 and at least 28.5% by 2040. To meet these targets, it aims to have 5.9GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 11GW by 2040.

Earlier this year, Poland’s energy regulatory office awarded contracts for difference (CfDs) to just over 5.9GW of planned capacity in the Baltic Sea.

It is due to award a further 5GW through competitive tenders in 2025 and 2027.
