Baywa has acquired Hanover-based NWind to strengthen its presence in the north of the country.
The transaction includes a portfolio of approximately 700MW across 60 wind projects, and represents “another important milestone for BayWa in its home market”, the developer stated.
BayWa now has a wind project pipeline of 2.5GW under development in Germany. It bid successfully in the country’s latest onshore wind auction last month.
“The acquisition of NWind fits perfectly with our development strategy in Germany,” said Rainer Heyduck, managing director of BayWa Wind.
The German government has recently agreed to a 65% cut in carbon emissions by 2030 — up from 55% `— and carbon neutrality by 2045, five years sooner than the original target of 2050.
“To meet renewable generation and emission reduction targets, the German wind market is poised for further growth during the coming years. With the acquisition of NWind, we are ideally positioned to accelerate the growth of our already successful wind projects business,” Heyduck said.
NWind has been active in the German wind energy sector for more than 20 years and is known for its strong regional roots and local market expertise.
Nils Niescken, managing director of NWind said: “By combining our local focus and knowledge with BayWa’s own extensive capabilities, we will be able to successfully implement this significant project pipeline and be fully prepared for further evolutions in the German wind and electricity markets.”
Beyond political support, developing wind projects in Germany to achieve a more sustainable energy system will require “engaging with citizens and communities and making them an integral part of the transition”, Heyduck added.
He said that BayWa was committed to establishing participation models for citizens and communities. “Only when everyone works together, will we make this decade the success it must be for the global energy transition and a greener future.”
