Announced today, RWE Renewables, alongside Greencode, will allow E.on to buy 100% of the electricity produced by the Humber Gateway offshore wind farm from 2022 until 2035, including the site鈥檚 renewable obligation certificates (ROCs).
RWE is the majority owner (51%) of the聽219MW Humber Gateway project after it took over the site last year as part of a complex asset swap with fellow German utility E.on.
It recently divested a 49% stake in Humber Gateway to the Greencoat UK Wind renewable infrastructure fund but continues to operate the wind farm.
Located off the east Yorkshire coast, the wind farm was commissioned in 2015 and is capable of supplying green electricity equivalent to the annual average demand of almost 300,000 UK homes, according to RWE Renewables,聽
Tom Glover, RWE Renewables chief commercial officer and UK country chair, said the UK played a鈥漦ey role鈥 in RWE鈥檚 strategy to grow its renewables business and to become carbon neutral by 2040.聽
In a statement, he said: 鈥淲ith the signing of the PPA with E.on UK we demonstrate our ability to support electricity suppliers in providing CO2-free power to their customers.鈥
In the UK, RWE is currently constructing the聽857MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm and is developing the聽1400MW Sofia (formerly Dogger Bank Teesside B) offshore wind farm, both of which will expand RWE鈥檚 current UK portfolio of nine offshore wind farms.聽
By the end of 2022, RWE wants to see its renewables portfolio grow to more than 13GW capacity by investing 鈧5 billion net.
