Wind developers avoid latest German wind-solar PV tender

No wind power developer has ever been successful in Germany鈥檚 technology-neutral tenders, which pit wind and solar PV against one another

No wind developers bid against their solar PV counterparts in Germany鈥檚 latest technology-neutral tender, meaning solar PV has now swept up in each of the country鈥檚 six joint auction rounds.

The German federal energy regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur (BNA), awarded contracts to 43 solar PV projects, of 201.9惭奥听combined capacity.

The tender 鈥 with an initial allocation of 200MW 鈥 was again massively oversubscribed, attracting 91 bids totalling 518.1MW.

Prices were in the 鈧51.80-54.50/MWh range, with a weighted average of 鈧53.30/MWh 鈥 slightly above the 鈧52.30 seen in the latest solar PV-only tender.

By comparison, in Germany's most recent onshore wind-only tender, successful bids were in the 鈧56-62/MWh range, with a weighted average of 鈧61.90/MWh.聽

These average prices and ranges have largely stabilised, while all of Germany鈥檚 2020 onshore wind-only tenders have been undersubscribed.

The head of Germany鈥檚 wind energy association (BWE) has repeatedly called for the government to scrap the joint solar-wind auctions.聽

Wolfram Axthelm argues that 鈥渢hey neglect the effects of the overall system鈥.

Germany鈥檚 next technology specific 鈥 wind- and solar-only 鈥 tenders are scheduled for 1 December.
