Enercon has received its first firm order for its E-160 EP5 E2 turbines for an onshore wind farm in Vietnam, as the German manufacturer looks to target international markets.
It will supply the 5.5MW turbines – as well as E-138 EP3 E2 models – for renewables investor Trungnam Group’s 400MW Ea Nam wind farm in the Dak Lak province in central Vietnam.
The manufacturer will supply its 5.5MW direct-drive permanent magnet generator turbines installed on modular steel towers, having recently installed this tower type for the first time in Vietnam.
Enercon’s regional sales manager for Asia Pacific Steffen Brauns said the E-160 EP5 E2 turbine will have the biggest rotor diameter and also the largest generator capacity to be installed in the country
Construction is due to start later this year, ahead of project completion in 2021.
The deal is the first recorded firm order for Enercon’s E-160 EP5 E2 model, talhough it does have an exclusivity agreement with Chilean utility Colbun to use the turbines at a 607MW project.
Enercon is targeting international markets as it waits for the onshore wind sector in its native Germany to recover.
It has now received more than 1GW of orders in Vietnam as part of this global push.
The Ea Nam project will receive payments under Vietnam’s current feed-in tariff scheme, which is expected to expire at the end of 2021, but could also be extended by two years.
