The NJBPU has opened up for bids for up to 2.4GW of offshore wind in New Jersey under its strategic wind plan for 7.5GW.

This second tender will award contracts for between 1.2GW and 2.4GW of offshore wind energy, and could triple the state’s awarded capacity from 1.1GW to 3.5GW.

Governor Phil Murphy, who is pushing for 7.5GW of offshore wind energy in New Jersey by 2035, said: “Developing New Jersey’s offshore wind industry will bring thousands of good-paying jobs and millions of dollars in economic development to our state to aid our economic recovery from Covid-19.

“This second solicitation not only reinforces our commitment to fighting climate change and achieving 100%�� clean energy by 2050, but it secures New Jersey’s foothold as a national leader in the growing US offshore wind industry.”

The board will accept applications until 10 December, with awards of offshore wind projects expected in June 2021.

The board also approved the final New Jersey Offshore Wind Strategic Plan with a roadmap for 7.5GW of offshore wind energy by 2035.

There are ongoing habitat surveys taking place, as well as fish and wildlife studies to provide crucial data on the state’s natural resources.

NJBPU president Joseph L. Fiordaliso said: “The environmental benefits and economic potential of offshore wind are more encouraging than ever in these difficult times.

“By investing in clean energy now, we can help get thousands of New Jerseyans back to work while building a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient future for our children and grandchildren.”

The first offshore wind site was awarded in 2019 to Ørsted’s 1.1GW Ocean Wind, the largest single-project award in the country.

That wind farm will be built 24km off the coast of Atlantic City and is expected to begin operating in 2024.

It is projected to generate an estimated $1.17 billion in economic benefits for New Jersey and create 15,000 jobs over the 20-year life of the project.
