Kansai Electric Power enters US wind market

Japan-based Kansai Electric Power has bought a 48.5% stake in the 525MW Aviator wind farm in Texas, its first foray into the US renewables market.

Some of Aviator's output will be bought by McDonald's — the fast-food giant's first renewable energy deal

The 525MW Aviator Ìýproject is the Japanese utility’s fifth overseas buy-in to date and the first renewable project on US soil ever.

It has previously taken stakes in the UK’s Triton Knowl and Moray East offshore projects, as well as the Piiparinmäki wind farm in Finland and the Republic of Ireland’s Evalair site, both onshore.

The addition of Aviator boostsÌýKansai's overseas renewable generation capacity to 950MW.

The 191-turbine wind farm, 550km north-west of Houston, is being developed by Apex Clean Energy and has corporate power purchase deals with Facebook and McDonald's, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the data and research division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç. It expected to come online this summer.
