Wind turbines across the world generated a total of 1,429.6TWh in 2019, against 724.1TWh produced by solar and 651.8TWh by other renewables, according to BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2020.
The first time wind power generation edged over other renewables combined was in 2018. Even though solar grew 24.3% year on year in 2019 — nearly twice the rate of wind growth at 12.6% — wind power generation continues to dominate the green energy sector.
The global energy scenario in 2019 saw declines in oil and coal generation against minimal growth in overall energy consumption (+1.3%). Gas generation grew 3.2%, while generation from renewable energy sources rose 13.7% — not far off the 16.2% growth it experienced over the whole of the previous decade.
BP is one of several fossil-fuel companies that have committed to transitioning to carbon-free energy production. A review of spending by ten oil and gas majors last month revealed that only one of them, Norway’s Equinor, plans to focus its spending over the next five years on renewable energy.Â
