The NaiKun Offshore Wind Farm, planned to be around 400MW, was sold by the NaiKun Wind Energy Group to Northland for an undisclosed fee. Additional payments will be made subject to other project milestones.
The project is located on the north-west coast of Canada and has been in development for over a decade.
In August 2019, NaiKun announced it had signed an indicative offer with an unnamed major offshore wind developer.
Northland said it would work closely with the Haida Nation indigenous community with their potential involvement in the project.
"Northland can apply both its global offshore wind experience and long track record developing Canadian power projects to this Project," said Northland CEO Mike Crawley.
Northland has offshore wind assets in Europe, including the 600MW Gemini site in the Netherlands, and Asia Pacific.
In February, it announced the acquisition of developer Dado Ocean Wind Farm, which has a pipeline of offshore wind farms off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. It was also successful in Taiwan's offshore wind licensing rounds.
In September 2017, Ørsted – then Dong Energy – entered a partnership with NaiKun to support the development of the project.
However, the market leader promptly quit the agreement in October 2018 to focus on its US portfolio, which grew rapidly following its acquisition of Deepwater Wind.
"Since the formation of the partnership in September of 2017, progress has been made in the development of the project, but it is still in the development phase in a less mature market compared to others like the US east coast," Thomas Brostrøm, president of Ørsted North America, said at the time.
