Northland Power scraps mono-bucket trial

Northland Power will no longer install the world鈥檚 first commercial trial of mono-bucket foundations at its 252MW Deutsche Bucht wind farm in the German North Sea.

Universal Foundation provided the two mono-buckets for the trial

The Canadian developer had paused plans to install two mono-buckets in November 2019 after identifying 鈥渢echnical issues鈥. It will not finish evaluating their cause until mid-2020.

Northland has now decided against the demonstrator 鈥渄ue to the timing issues associated with the technical review, among other considerations鈥, the company stated.

This will not impact Northland鈥檚 2020 financial guidance because contributions from the pilot project were excluded from previous estimates, it added.

In its full-year results, Northland Power had reported a non-cash impairment loss of C$98 million (US$70 million) for project costs incurred with the demonstrator project.

Deutsche Bucht鈥檚 total estimated project cost was valued at approximately 鈧1.4 billion (US$1.5 billion).

Northland Power had installed 252MW Deutsche Bucht 鈥檚 31 monopile foundations by the end of September 2019.

Mono-buckets comprise steel cylindrical base and uses the foundation鈥檚 own weight and a vacuum to seal itself to the seabed.

This removes the need for piling and means the site can be returned to its natural state after the foundation has been removed.

Northland had hoped to test the foundations鈥 impact on marine habitats.
