Once held up as the premier wind market in Europe, Spain has suffered years of low activity after a harsh retroactive cut to the subsidy regime brought installations to a standstill.
Between 2010 and 2017, the Spanish wind capacity remained around the 20-22GW mark having added over 15GW across the ten years previously.
But it seems the market is well on its road to recovery, adding 2,243MW in 2019, according to the Spanish wind energy association, AEE, after 2018's 393MW of new capacity. It means Spain's installed wind capacity stands at 25.7GW as of the end of 2019.
As a result of the additional generation, wind provided 20.8% of Spain's electricity last year.
"To continue this growth path for wind, we hope that soon the (EU-required) National Energy and Climate Plan is approved, with ambitious targets for wind and 2030. The sector and technology are ready for it," said AEE CEO, Juan Virgilio Marquez.
"Similarly, it will be necessary to define and design the tools to ensure progress at the pace required in the next decade," he added.
