Nexans in US tie-up with Ørsted

French cable supplier Nexans will build a cable facility in the US, after signing a framework agreement with offshore wind developers Ørsted and Eversource Energy.

Nexans could provide up to 1,000km of export cables in the US under the framework deal

Eversource is a US energy company and transmission builder, as well as Ørsted’s US offshore wind development partner.

Under the deal, Nexans will provide up to 1,000km of export cabling to Ørsted’s potential offshore wind projects off the US east coast. Nexans expects the first order to be delivered in 2022, while the framework deal stretches to 2027.

As a result of the contract, Nexans will establish a high voltage cable manufacturing plant in the US — the first of its kind in the US.

Ørsted and Eversource are jointly developing 2.7GW of offshore wind capacity off the US’s northeast coast.

The five projects are all due online by the middle of the next decade, subject to securing power contracts with state utilities.
