The manufacturer is due to provide three of its V164-10MW turbines for the 30MW pilot project, which is being developed by a consortium of Engie, EDP Renewables and Caisse des Dépôts.
Its three turbines would be deployed atop Principle Power’s semi-submersible WindFloat platforms in the Mediterranean Sea, with commissioning planned for 2022.
The project partners plan to use Port La Nouvelle in southern France as the assembly harbour before towing the turbines more than 16km out to sea off the coast of Leucate and Le Barcares.
EFGL would be MHI Vestas’ fourth floating offshore wind farm (fifth, including projects with turbines supplied by parent company Vestas) and its second such deployment in France.
Vestas, which owns 50% of the MHI Vestas joint venture with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, supplied one 2MW turbine to the now-decommissioned off the coast of Portugal.
MHI Vestas, meanwhile, has been named as preferred supplier for the project in Portuguese waters, as well as the wind farm off the coast of Scotland.
The manufacturer was also chosen to supply three units of its V164-9.5MW model at the Île de Groix demonstration project off the west coast of France in early October, replacing GE as the preferred turbine supplier.
