US surpasses 100GW milestone

The US has passed the milestone of 100GW of wind projects operating and connected to the grid, according to the Q3 2019 market report from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).

From humble beginnings: the US has now tipped over 100GW of installed wind capacity

"100GW of wind isn’t just a number, it’s the product of 40 years of ingenuity and work from the more than 114,000 Americans directly employed by the wind industry," said AWEA CEO Tom Kiernan.

The near-term wind development pipeline has reached a record 46.5GW, and the offshore pipeline is 6GW in advanced development, the trade organisation said.

The modern global utility-scale wind industry was born in California in the 1980s.

Developers installed eight new wind projects for more than 1.9GW in the quarter, the highest third quarter for installations on record.
