It is in line to supply its SG 8.0-167 DD turbine for Obayashi Corporation’s planned project off of Akita prefecture in the north of the country.
The developer, a Japanese construction and engineering company, plans to enter its Northern Akita project into forthcoming auctions proposed under Japan’s law promoting offshore wind, .
The offshore wind promotion law came into force on 1 April and Japan’s ministry of economy, trade and industry is now preparing regulatory details for auctions.
A firm order is dependent on Obayashi’s final investment decision of the project. Commercial operation is planned from 2024.
The turbines Siemens Gamesa supplies will be adapted for conditions specific to Asia-Pacific markets – including Japan – as the manufacturer .
Siemens Gamesa and Obayashi Corporation have also signed a memorandum of understanding to "promote benefits to the local society throughout the project", the companies stated.
This includes developing local infrastructure for offshore wind businesses and exploring the possibility of collaborating with local suppliers, Siemens Gamesa added.
