Her role on the board will be subject to a shareholder vote at Vestas’ annual general meeting on 3 April.
Currently, Thorning-Schidt serves as CEO of charity Save the Children International – a role she has held for three years – but will step down once a successor has been found.
Her appointment follows the resignation of Lykke Friis from the Vestas board in July 2018. Friis also served as Denmark’s minister for climate and energy from 2009 to 2011.
"In Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Vestas has found a strong candidate who has the core competencies for the work of the board and with her experience can support Vestas becoming the global leader in sustainable energy.
"[She] shares Vestas’ aspiration to meet the growing global energy needs sustainably and address climate change by making the existing energy system sustainable, and she will provide extensive insights into the political conditions around government-regulated industries such as the energy industry, as well as a global network and experience from managing complex organisations," Vestas said.
China
Vestas has also announced a 101MW turbine purchase agreement with an unnamed customer in China to provide 46 V120-2.2MW turbines.
The machines will be installed at a hub height of 152 metres, making them some of the tallest in China, the company said.
The contract includes a two-year service agreement, with delivery expected to begin in Q2 2019.
