Acciona already operates a wind-plus-storage facility in Navarre, Spain, and it plans to add an storage component to the 157.5MW Mortlake South project, for which it was awarded a power contract in Victoria’s renewable energy auction last month.
At the Global Wind Summit in Hamburg, Linares told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç TV that the Barásoain project in Navarre had taught the developer much about managing energy in a hybrid system and developing a business case.
She added that the main benefits of hybrid projects are wind and solar PV’s complementary seasonal generation and that a shared grid connection makes output more stable and helps to reduce Capex and Opex.
However, hybrid projects have their limits, according to Linares.
"The main barrier is the grid connection capability," she told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç TV.
"As we are ‘hybridating’ technologies, we are increasing the level of penetration on the grid. But this penetration has a limit: Obviously this is going to (lead to) power curtailment."
