Digitalisation 'boosts transparency', Romo Wind believes

HAMBURG 2018: The wind power industry faces a "cultural challenge" in sharing data, Romo Wind CEO Jan Nikolaisen told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç TV.

"On balance", digitalisation is boosting transparency within the industry, but this increase in transparency is "selective", he said.

Nikolaisen added: "Its those with access to data that are best placed.

"What we see as a trend is that the operators start to get more and more access to the data a wind turbine produces, but the data is still not (universally) shared, so that the industry as a whole cannot benefit.

"Part of the challenge here is that although data can be easily shared and anonymised, we don't have the culture in the industry to share data, so the challenge we have is more cultural than technical."

He argued that comparisons between turbines – enabled by greater access to data – were critical to driving competition and lowering levelised cost of energy (LCOE).

Hoewever, Nikolaisen concluded: "The importance of who owns and who has access to data remains a point of tension in the industry."
