For five years now London Array has been able to tag itself the world’s biggest offshore wind farm. But that claim came to an end in early September, with the official inauguration of Walney Extension.
London Array requires 175 3.6MW Siemens Gamesa turbines for its 630MW capacity. Walney Extension achieves 659MW with just 87 machines, intriguingly split between 40 MHI Vestas V164s rated at 8.25MW and 47 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 units. Ørsted at least, will be able to make direct performance comparisons between the two.
Despite having only 87 turbines to London Array’s 175, Walney Extension has the larger "footprint" — covering 145km2 of sea against 107km2.
