GERMANY: A subsidiary of wind developer Wpd is planning to turn a former naval harbour into a residential area for offshore wind engineers, mechanics and technicians.

The renovated Borkum harbour will remove the need for hotel stays or long commutes for workers servicing the ten wind farms off the island’s coast, Borkum Hafen Immobilien, Wpd’s property development arm, explained.

Borkum harbour could eventually consist of 240 residential units to be completed across two construction phases, with the first tranche of 100 apartments scheduled to be built by 2020.

Kai-Uwe Thase, authorised signatory of Borkum Hafen Immobilien, explained: "It’s an immense effort for colleagues working offshore to make the trip to their demanding place of work every day.

"It’s a major relief if they can live comfortably and as close as possible for the period of their work, and for companies employing offshore employees, the apartments represent a huge saving in cost."

The real estate developer also intends to add shops, bars and restaurants, a cinema, a barbecue site, communal kitchens and common rooms, a fitness room, laundry areas and storage options, Thase added.

The island of Borkum was the site of a military base during the two World Wars.
