Walmart signs more wind purchase deals

UNITED STATES: Retail company Walmart has signed two power purchase agreements totalling 300MW from wind projects in South Dakota.

The power will meet the needs of Walmart stores across seven Midwestern states

The Arkansas-based firm announced it would buy 150MW of wind power from of Geronimo Energy’s 200-400MW Crocker project, under development in Clark County, and 150MW from Engie’s Triple H wind farm, planned for a site in Hyde and Hughes Counties.

"The 1.26 billion kWh produced annually from these arrangements will be equivalent to the majority of the electricity needed to power Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centers across seven Midwestern states," said Micah Ragland, Walmart’s Director of Sustainability Communications.

Ragland said that Walmart anticipates doubling its US renewable energy use.

The company already buys wind power from more than 503MW of projects in the US, as well as from projects in the UK, Germany, France, Kenya, Australia, Mexico and Brazil, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the research and data division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.
