Only hydro, covering 55% of all power consumed, produced more than wind, according to new data from REN, the Portuguese transmission system operator (TSO).
Throughout the month, renewables produced a minimum of 86% (7 March) and a maximum of 143% (11 March), averaging 103.6% across the month as a whole.
By 2040, the country's renewable energy association, Apren, expects "renewables will be able to guarantee, in a cost-effective way, the total annual electricity consumption of mainland Portugal".
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Spain, TSO Red Eléctrica de España (REE), reported a triple wind record for the end of March.
First it produced 7.7TWh of wind power in March, from the mainland’s 23GW of wind capacity, the largest monthly total on record. That production total equated to 33.1% of consumption in March — another monthly record for the country.
Finally, Spanish wind also hit a quarterly record, covering 26.7% of consumption in the January-March period.
