A total of 29 "salaried" employees across four of SGRE's US locations, and 195 "hourly" employees at the Fort Madison blade plant in Iowa will be laid off.
"Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy informed employees about efforts to position the US business for future competitiveness. While we remain strongly committed to the long-term viability of the US wind market, a difficult decision has been made to adjust the workforce by 224 employees," the company said in a statement.
"Reflecting the importance of the blade facility to our business strategy, we are pursuing significant capital investments to better serve our customers as we install additional blade moulds for new wind turbine models.
"We appreciate the professionalism and dedication of our valued employees, and we will assist them during this time of transition.
"As always, our headcount is based on the needs of the business. We are continuously monitoring the market and will adjust according to market needs and customer demands," the statement continued.
In July, SGRE announced the closure of a blade plant in Ontario, Canada, affecting 340 jobs. It also cut over 1,000 European jobs in 2017, mostly in blade manufacturing.
