Vestas' 2MW platform reaches 20,000th installation

DENMARK: Vestas has installed its 20,000th 2MW turbine worldwide at one of the sites of the 2GW Wind XI project in the United States.

The 2MW platform has been installed in 45 countries across six continents since it was first introduced to the market 17 years ago, Vestas said.

Since then, the platform’s annual energy production (AEP) has increased by 40%, the company claimed.

Nacelles of the platform’s five variants maintain the same dimensions to secure predictability and installation.

First introduced as the V80 in 2000, the 2MW platform was upgraded to the V100 and V110, before the V116 and V120 models were unveiled in April.

The platform’s milestone installation took place at MidAmerican Energy Company’s project in Iowa, with the installation of a V110-2.0MW turbine.

Vestas signed a conditional agreement to supply 1,000 V110-2.0MW turbines for the project in June 2016, and has since received firm orders for 1.475GW.

The platform makes up 12% of the US’ total installed wind capacity, and 8% of the global total, Vestas claimed.

Chris Brown, president of Vestas' sales and service division in the United States and Canada said: "The 2MW platform has been instrumental in Vestas' success in the US, and has delivered maximum production and technology value for our customers.

"The continued product innovation and platform evolution have enabled incredible platform growth and we're proud of achieving this milestone here in the US."
