The engineering consultants’ 2MW Floatgen project, which is to be moored approximately 25km away, will include the first offshore wind turbine to be installed off the French coast.

The project will enable Ideol to evaluate the performance of the floating foundation, the company said.

The company announced the launch on Twitter with the words: "It floats… Stay tuned!"

The floating system will be towed to Ecole Centrale de Nantes' test site off the coast of Le Croisic later this autumn, Ideol said.

The installation of both tower and wind turbine on the floating structure at quay side eliminates costly and often hazardous offshore operations, the platform specialist added.

In January, Ideol announced a partnership with Atlantis Energy to develop 1.5GW of floating projects in the UK.

And in March, the company signed a cooperation deal with Irish developer Gaelectic to develop a 30MW-plus project which might expand into a multi-gigawatt portfolio.

Bouygues built the floating foundation for the demonstration awaiting transportation to Le Croisic.
