Tacke takes over the new Spain-based manufacturer with immediate effect following a meeting of the board of directors yesterday (8 May).

"We are very pleased that Markus Tacke has accepted this appointment. His broad experience in the wind industry, combined with his strong leadership and track record will ensure the company tackles the challenges of the future, continues to deliver value to our customers, and takes Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy to new heights," said SGRE chairwoman Rosa Maria Garcia.

Tacke had been named as the head of SGRE's offshore wind business when the merger was finalised in early April. He will be replaced by former Siemens head of offshore wind Michael Hannibal.

Tacke was CEO of Siemens' wind business for four years prior to the merger and also served as EWEA (now WindEurope) chairman between 2014 an 2016.

He replaces Martin, former CEO of Gamesa, who is retiring after five years at the helm of Gamesa, as was his intention when the merger of the two turbine manufacturers was completed last month.

"I am convinced that this merger has placed our united company in a stronger and better position to create value for our customers and to meet the challenges facing our industry. I also have full confidence our team has the talent and skills to shape and lead the wind industry for years to come," Martin said.

The remaining members of the board will remain in place with Andrew Hall as Chief Financial Officer; Xabier Etxeberria as CEO Onshore; Mark Albenze is CEO of the servicing unit; and David Mesonero will remain as corporate development, strategy and integration managing director.
