The regime came into force in April, which marks the start of the fiscal year in Japan. The decision follows the release of a guideline drawn up by a sub-committee of the Japan Electric Power Association in March.
The move will cover over 90% of Japan’s turbines, and brings wind power into line with similar tests for fossil fuel and nuclear power plants.
High performers on the tests may be certified as such by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and allowed to report only every six years.
METI is reponsible for Japan's energy policy, including wind power, and power plant safety.
