The two firms will provide Power Grid Corporation of India with a 200 kilometre link between Pugalur in southern India with Trichur, in the southeast of the country.
"Siemens will be supplying two converter stations with two parallel converters, each rated at 1GW... while Sumitomo Electric will be responsible for the HVDC cable system in the DC circuit," Siemens said.
The link is expected to be completed in the first half of 2020.
The order is the first following a cooperation agreement between the two firms to work on HVDC projects.
