The New York Offshore Wind Alliance (NYOWA) is made up of representatives from Deepwater Wind, Dong, the National Wildlife Federation, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club and the University of Delaware.
"The mission of NYOWA is to promote policies that will lead to the development of offshore wind off the coast of New York State. NYOWA's specific goal is to secure a commitment from New York to develop 5GW of offshore wind power by 2030. The Alliance will undertake both public education and advocacy to build support for achieving this goal in New York," the group said.
In November 2015, New York governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law requiring utilities to source 50% of their power for New York from renewable sources.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) hold an auction for a 328km2 area off New York by the end of 2016, or early 2017.
Dong already has licenses for two offshore projects in the US, off New Jersey and Massachusetts.
And Deepwater Wind is planning a 90MW project off the coast of Long Island.
"By developing the world-class wind resources off the coast of Long Island and New York City, New York State can not only achieve the Governor's laudable goal of 50% renewable energy by 2030 but also will help to defer the need to build costly new power plants or controversial new transmission lines," said Deepwater Wind CEO Jeff Grybowski.
