Backpage: The last word in wind - September 2016

WORLDWIDE: Planet harmers turned into toys; wind industry goes football crazy; US facts and figures; plus the Crown Estate on UK offshore wind.

Inaction figures: The Koch brothers with a chest of money and Chris Christie wearing a selective vision helmet

These toys are harming the planet

The team behind environmental documentary TV series Years of Living Dangerously, broadcast on the National Geographic channel, are the people responsible for these nightmare dolls.

Launched to coincide with the Republican party convention in July, these "climate inaction figures" are likenesses of some of America's most prominent right-wing deniers of climate change. There are eight in all, if you count the double-head Koch brothers as one.

The others include the usual suspects — Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, Chris Christie, etc — and all come with a special accessory, a fact-defying weapon of choice.

For the Kochs, it's a huge chest of money, while former House of Representatives speaker has a cloak of denial, wields an anti-science shield, and Christie has a selective vision helmet. ? The Republican nominee for US president relies on Twitter to recycle his climate change myth message.

Example provided: "It's snowing and freezing in NYC. What the hell happened to global warming?"

FOOTBALL FRENZY

France's wind industry used the holiday season for a five-a-side football tournament, featuring 73 team from 50 wind-power firms.

The event, which started in 2011, has now become a regular fixture in the industry calendar, a welcome opportunity to meet and simply have some fun. This year they raised EUR23,500 for the WWF wildlife charity.

The matches, which last about ten minutes each, were hard-fought. The winners' trophy for mixed teams, a golden blade, went to DNV GL, while Akuo Energy won the women's event. The staff of Eoliennes en Mer (Dieppe-Le Treport) were voted best supporters.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
