The 's main focus is on energy efficiency and emissions. However, the government committed to working with indigenous First Nation communities to develop renewable energy projects, such as wind.
CANWEA's Ontario regional director Brandy Giannetta said: "Greenhouse gas emission reductions of the scale needed to realise Ontario's targets can only be achieved through continued decarbonisation of the electricity system and the subsequent use of clean electricity to replace fossil fuels across a wide variety of end uses.
"Ontario's action plan includes measures to increase the necessary focus on zero carbon electricity production and increased electrification and fuel-switching to renewable resources like wind energy.
"The Canadian Wind Energy Association and its members look forward to working with the Ontario government as it strives to lead Ontario and Canada toward the deep cuts in emissions needed to address climate change while strengthening the economy," Giannetta added.
Ontario is the province in Canada with the largest amount of wind capacity installed — more than 4GW.
On 1 August, it will launch a new competitive tender for up to 600MW of wind, double the amount it had originally planned to buy.
In March, tha Canadian province awarded contracts in its first competitive procurement since ending its feed-in tariff programme in 2013.
