Lithuania said it intends to offer tenders to build offshore wind projects in a similar model to Denmark, which it said has plenty of experience in offshore wind.
The government said the tender would be held after it had inspected areas of the seabed. It said by taking on the assessments, it would reduce the burden on business, protect consumers' interests and ensure objective results.
Estonian wind developer 4Energia are looking at developing a 400-800MW offshore wind project in the Lithuanian exclusive economic zone, 27 kilometers from the coast.
According to the 4Energia website, the development company completed an environmental impact assessment process on the proposed site in 2014.
Lithuania as 99 kilometers of coastline in the southeast Baltic Sea. It had 424MW of onshore wind capacity installed at the end of 2015.
