The Asian market, particularly China, is expected to drive the majority of the 160MW of new capacity with between 27-28GW of new projects added annually in the next three years, according to the report, compiled by “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence, the data and research division of “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç.
China will provide up to 23GW annually of that total, the report suggested.
"While most of this will be onshore, China's offshore activity will mean that Asia-Pacific (as a region) puts in an impressive performance in this segment with around 2.85GW forecast to be installed at sea this year, 3.5GW in 2017 and 2.7GW in 2018," said the report.
Europe is expected to add between 14-15GW annually by the end of 2018.
Despite China's dominance over the next few years, US-focused developers will lead the installation of expected new capacity between 2015 and 2018.
Apex Clean Energy (7.65GW), Scandia Wind Southwest (5GW) and Invenergy (3.54GW) top the list, according to the report.
Denmark's Dong Energy is expected to maintain its market leading position in the offshore sector with an additional 2.9GW expected to be added by the end of 2018.
