Along with the new office, Senvion has also announced a 6.15MW turbine order for a project in Japan.
The German manufacturer will supply three MM92 2.05MW turbines to a site in Japan for an undisclosed customer. It will partner with local energy management firm Meidensha Corporation on the project, Senvion added.
Senvion said its turbines would be among the first to be installed under the government's new construction standards to cope with extreme wind loads.
To head up the new regional office, Senvion has appointed Kazuhiro Tanaka as its general manager in Japan. Tanaka has been in the renewable energy industry since 2000 and previously acted as Senvion's sales agent in Japan.
Senvion has installed 68 turbines, totaling 118MW, to date – all of which were sold through Tanaka.
"The future market for new wind farms looks very promising and we are pleased that there will now be an established local Senvion presence. Senvion's turbine technology is well suited to the Japanese market where high performance and reliability are valued," Tanaka said.
The new office follows one set up in India in February, lead by Amit Kansal in Dehli.
Senvion's recent expansion in India and Japan are part of the strategy devised by its new owners, following its acquisition by private equity firms Centerbridge Partners and Arpwood Capital in January 2015.
The plan "includes increased investment into research and development for product development, and further global expansion", Senvion said. Until now, much of the company's business has been in Europe.
