MHI-Vestas secures lead in 450MW Dong deal

GERMANY: MHI-Vestas (MV) has been given preferred supplier status by Dong Energy for the 450MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 project.

MHI-Vestas' V164 8MW turbine

The contract is for 56 V164 8MW turbines to go to the project, which is located in the German North Sea.

According to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç's data division, WPO Intelligence, the project is located 57 kilometres from shore in depths of around 25 metres. It is set for completion in 2018.

In a statement, Dong said it planned to sign an unconditional order later this year. It said this was conditional upon it making a final investment decision on the project.

Speaking about the decision, Samuel Leupold, executive vice president for Dong, said: "The performance of the 8MW turbine from MV is decisive for us selecting it as the preferred turbine for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 development project."

Borkum Riffgrund 2 was initially jointly owned by Dong and PNE Wind. Dong acquired PNE's 50% share in December 2009.
