Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will attend, only the second time that the US’s head of energy has come to the annual conference of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). In 1999, Energy Secretary Bill Richardson headlined wind's annual US jamboree in Burlington, Vermont.
Also attending this year’s conference will be Doug Greenholz, president of IKEA Property, and Nicolas Coons, Google’s head of energy investment, although Coon’s Q&A will be during a private industry-sponsored session.
Tipped to make a major announcement on Tuesday is GE Renewable Energy, possibly to do with the company’s so-called industrial internet — the ability of wind turbines and facilities to talk with each other.
GE’s website says: "Something big is in the wind. This May 19th, analytical brain will meet industrial brawn. Is your wind farm ready?" An accompanying video asks, "What if your wind farm could talk?" and promises real-time data to increase output and reliability.
For its part, Siemens will announce an addition to its onshore wind product line, also on Tuesday.
Some 400 exhibitors have registered, down from last year's 440.
