Maltese government turns down 95MW consent application

MALTA: The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has turned down the application presented by the previous Maltese government for the 95MW Sikka l-Bajda project.

MEPA said it agreed with its planning directorate's earlier assessment that the detrimental environmental effects of the 19-turbine wind farm outweighed its benefits. The project was planned for a site in the Mediterranean Sea, 1.5 kilometres offshore.

Sikka l-Bajda was to come online by 2020.

The otherMaltese project in the pipeline is the 54MW Hexicon combined wave and wind development. However, it was rejected for EU funding in 2012.
