GE wins first 3.2MW turbine deal

TURKEY: GE has been handed a first order from developer Icdas for its 3.2MW turbine for a 60.8MW project near Canakkale, northwest Turkey.

GE's 3.2MW turbine will be installed in northwest Turkey

GE will deliver 19 3.2-103 turbines to the Biga Res project. It will be the first commercial project to use the turbines.

The manufacturer was unable to confirm a date of delivery of the turbines due to "customer sensitive information" but said the project is expected to enter commercial operation in May 2016. There is no service agreement attached to the deal "at this time" GE added.

The turbines have been fitted with wind forecasting technology to allow it to operate at its best possible output. The turbine also features integrated energy storage, which can enable it to respond to supply and demand changes.

GE unveiled the 3.2MW turbine in October 2013, with the intention to deploy it in the UK, Ireland and Turkey.

The 3.2-103 is based on the company's 2.5MW platform and is designed to overcome restrictions in tip heights in the UK and Ireland while also increasing output, with the model available in hub heights between 70 and 98 metres.

Turkey is named as a target market due to the prevalence of windy, low-shear sites in the country, which GE said will suit the available hub heights.
