The contract with the electricity and energy ministry will cover the design, manufacture, supply, installation, connection, commissioning and operation of the project, located south-west of Sanaa on the Red Sea coast. Bids must be in by 10 May, with commissioning slated for 2018.
The project, which has been in the planning since 2009, has received support from a number of development agencies.
The Arab Fund for Social and Economic Development will extend a loan of $65 million and the OPEC Fund for International Development a loan of $20 million. The Saudi Fund for Development and the World Bank will each grant $20 million. The total project cost is estimated at $144 million.
The project will help address various barriers to wind power deployment in Yemen with a view to scaling up development through private financing or public-private partnerships.
