The Planning Inspectorate said the "" could be considered as part of the original application as the changes are deemed too small.
The authority's decision letter read, "The materiality of the change does not reach the threshold of constituting a new application".
Many objectors to the project, including who called for developer EDF's revised plan to be resubmitted through the planning process.
Developers of the 970MW Navitus Bay project submitted an alternative plan for the south coast development in November.
The new plans from the joint venture by Eneco Wind and EDF Energy are for a 630MW project with a maximum 105 turbines, using 6MW turbines. The new layout also moves the project further from the coastline.
The Planning Inspectorate has extended the examination timetable to give interested parties more time to comment on the project, and the smaller option, as a result of its decision.
Project Director, Mike Unsworth, welcomed the decision. "We are pleased that the Planning Inspectorate has agreed to consider our alternative option for fewer turbines, further offshore, as part of our original planning application.
"While this proposal provides a second option for consideration in that process, it does not replace our original proposal," he said.
Navitus Bay Development submitted the "Turbine Area Mitigation Option" after the Planning Inspectorate's examining panel asked if the developer would offer an adjusted plan during the examination process.
