ABB wins Butendiek cable work

GERMANY: ABB has won the contract to supply and installation of the cables connecting the Betendiek offshore wind project to its convertor platform, after previously proposed supplier Prysmian lost its cable at sea.

Three-core 155kV cabling will be used on the project

The company was selected by grid operator Tennet to provide the alternating current (AC) cabling to connect the 288MW German North-Sea project to the high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) SylWin Alpha converter platform.

Prysmian was originally lined up to supply the cable for this project, but the vessel carrying it , dropping its cargo to the bottom of the Mediterranean. Following this, ABB has been asked to step in to provide the AC cabling.

The system is a three-core 155kV submarine cable, approximately 38 kilometres long. It is scheduled to be installed and commissioned in 2015.

Installation of the 80 Siemens 3.6MW turbines started in September. The project is due to come online in 2015.
