Located on the country's northern Pacific coastline, the Cupisnique (83MW) and Talara (30.6MW) projects use Vestas 1.8MW turbines. ContourGlobal cited a combined investment of nearly $250 million.
Peru's abundant wind resources make wind power significantly less expensive than many of the fossil-fuel power plants, said ContourGlobal Latam CEO Alessandra Marinheiro.
The launches follow recent claims by Peru's director general of electricity, Luis Nicho, that the country is preparing to call a tender for around 1.2GW of renewables to help cover a 6-7% annual rise in electricity consumption.
In April this year the 32MW Marcona project, in San Juan de Marcona, was commissioned. This was Peru's first industrial-scale wind farm, owned by Spanish construction firm ACS, which is also currently building the nearby 97MW Tres Hermanas wind plant.
Since 2012, the Peruvian government has granted 650MW of wind prospecting concessions, according to figures from “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Intelligence.
