Massachusetts governor draws on UK offshore experience

UNITED STATES: The Governor of Massachusetts and leaders of the US offshore wind industry have visited the UK in order to draw on experience from the world's biggest offshore market.

Governor Deval Patrick is looking to learn from UK experience

Governor Deval Patrick was invited to the UK by the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult as Massachusetts aims to be among the first states to develop offshore wind through the Cape Wind project.

ORE Catapult CEO Andrew Jamieson and representatives from RenewableUK, National Grid MA, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, and Massachusetts Clean Energy Center met to discuss the emerging offshore wind industry in Massachusetts and how best practices can be adopted from the UK.

The discussion touched on the role of innovation, policy incentives, barriers to entering the market and technical challenges in establishing the industry, as well as project financing, and cost reduction mechanisms.

The 468MW Cape Wind offshore project is inching towards construction, with a earlier in September. However, it is in the courts after a local group campaigning against the development filed a brief to the Court of Appeals.
